Spring Training Game 26: Pineda, Drew lead team to win

New York Yankees 10 — Philadelphia Phillies 0 (6 innings)

Michael Pineda started today’s visit to the Philadelphia Phillies and would receive strong run support.

In the first inning, Michael Pineda allowed a pair of singles but generated a double play. In the second inning, the Yankees attempted to score their first run. Alex Rodriguez hit a one-out single and advanced to third on a Stephen Drew double. Chris Young would hit a fly ball to right field that Alex Rodriguez attempted to score on, but was thrown out at home for the double play to end the inning.

In the case of spring training starting pitchers, no news is good news. In five scoreless innings, Michael Pineda allowed five hits but struck out five and walked none.

In the fifth inning, the Yankees would get on the board in a big way. Brendan Ryan would start the inning with a double. Brett Gardner would hit a single and a passed ball would let both runners advance with Ryan scoring the first run of the game. Chase Headley and Carlos Beltran would hit a pair of singles with the Beltran single bringing in the second run of the game. Mark Teixeira kept the good times going with a single to score the third run of the game. Brian McCann would fly out for the first out but Alex Rodriguez would walk to load the bases. Stephen Drew would hit a single to left field, scoring two runs and increasing the lead to five. A new pitcher would come in but it made no difference to Chris Young. The Yankees outfielder hit a two-run double to center field and the Yankees created a sizable lead.

The Yankees would bat around in the fifth inning, sending 12 batters up for seven hits and two walks, resulting in seven runs.

In the sixth inning, the Yankees would add on more runs when a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for Tyler Austin. A three-run double by Austin would extend the Yankees lead to 10.

The rain would begin after the bases-clearing double and it would prolong enough to end this spring training game.
