#tbt – Yankees walkoff thanks to Mets error

With the Yankees headed into Queens for a crucial 3 game set with the Mets, let’s take a trip down memory lane…to June 12, 2009, to be exact. It’s a game we all remember; one, because it was during the season the Yankees won their first championship since 2000, two, because it was against the Mets, and three, because it was one of the luckiest (from a Yankees perspective) and most embarrassing (from a Mets perspective) walkoffs in history.YanksMets

Early in the 2009 season the Yankees struggled. They just retooled their roster with big name free agents Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia, and AJ Burnett after missing the playoffs for the first time since 1993. They just opened a billion-dollar new ballpark that sold sushi and had thousand-dollar seats, and was surrendering pop-fly homeruns like it was Williamsport. The team started the season like a collection of over-priced and over-the-hill veterans that would not sniff the playoffs, let alone win the World Series. But then in May and early June things started to turn around. The team started to gel, they started to hit, and they started to walkoff. Between May 1 and June 12 the Yankees had 6 walkoff wins. It seemed like every night someone new was coming up big and the 2009 Yankees were taking shape.

On June 12, 2009 the Mets strolled into the Bronx after the Yankees had just been swept in Boston (side note, the Yankees started 0-8 vs the Red Sox that season but wound up going 9-9). The Mets had also retooled their roster, adding Francisco Rodriguez and J.J. Putz to a bullpen that had struggled the previous few seasons. They opened a new stadium of their own and had high hopes for the 09 season, much like the Yanks.

In the first game of the weekend the Yankees were trailing 8-7 in the 9th with Francisco Rodriguez, the Mets new high priced closer, coming into the game. After a one out single by The Captain, Johnny Damon pinch-hit for Swisher. Damon struck out but Jeter swiped second during the at bat. The Mets then intentionally walked Tex to get to ARod. After working the count to 3-1, Alex popped up to short right field where Luis Castillo was camped under the ball ready to make the game-ending catch. And then this happened…

In typical Mets fashion the Yankees won the game on the error by Castillo. It was a great win for Yankees fans because it was yet another thing for us to rub in the Mets fans’ faces. And as we know, the Yankees continued their magical season that year and went on to lift the World Series trophy. As the Yanks now head into Queens 6 years later let’s hope the Mets have a little more of that Mets magic in them.
