This Day In Yankees History | 1978

On July 2, 1978, the Yankees were scheduled to play a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers. In the first game, Ron Guidry took a 12-0 record onto the mound at Yankee Stadium with a chance at finishing the day with the best start to a season in Yankees history. In usual Guidry form, especially in 1978, he delivered.

Louisiana Lightning would pitch 8 innings of 6 hit, 2 run baseball to up his ERA to 1.75 on the year. Rich Gossage pitched an inning of no-hit ball to wrap of the save in a Yankees 3-2 win. Thurman Munson had 3 hits in 4 at-bats, and the Yankees improved their record to 44-33.

Since I know you are all asking yourselves if the Yankees swept the doubleheader, I’ll save you some time. The Yankees won the 2nd game by a score of 5-3 courtesy of a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 9th off the bat of Gary Thomasson. Goose Gossage blew the save in game 2, while also earning the win.
