Yankees agree to deal Justin Wilson to Detroit

The Yankees have been involved in trade rumors surrounding Andrew Miller, but it was another left-handed relief pitcher that the team traded on Wednesday night.

According to Jennifer Hammond of Fox Sports 2 Detroit, the Yankees have agreed to trade relief pitcher Justin Wilson to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for right-handed minor league pitching prospects Luis Cessa and Chad Green.

After spending his first three big league seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Wilson was traded to the Yankees in November of 2014 in exchange for catcher Francisco Cervelli. In his only season in pinstripes, Wilson was a key factor in Joe Girardi‘s bullpen, posting a 5-0 record with a 3.10 ERA. His 74 appearances in 2015 tied fellow reliever Dellin Betances for the most on the Yankees roster.

Throughout the offseason, the Tigers have been looking to bolster their bullpen, and Wilson could play a big role for them in the future. His ability to be more than just a left-handed specialist is appealing, as he has shown that he is more than capable of getting batters out from both sides of the plate.

GM Brian Cashman has said that his goal was to upgrade the pitching depth at the Double-A level. Regardless, many are speculating that Cessa and Green could now be moved in another deal for a starter.
