Yankees Game 6: CC prevents the sweep with 7 strong

CC goes 7 shutout innings for his first win of the season.

New York Yankees 7 — Detroit Tigers 0

CC Sabathia got his first win of the season in today’s 7-0 win over the Detroit Tigers.

In a matchup of aces, Justin Verlander started for the Detroit Tigers. Francisco Cervelli put the first run on the board with a double in the second inning, scoring Ichiro Suzuki. After the second out, Jayson Nix would hit his first home run of the season, a two-run home run to left field, to put the Yankees ahead 3-0 against one of the best pitchers in the league. This inning was the one bad inning for Verlander but it would be enough for CC Sabathia.

The big Yankees left-hander struggled in the first start of the season against the Boston Red Sox, surrendering four runs in five innings. Today, Sabathia would go deep into the game and keep the potent Tigers lineup off the scoreboard.

In seven innings, Sabathia would give up four hits and three walks with four strikeouts. He would allow a baserunner to reach every inning but none of them got beyond second base. A key part of the Tigers lineup, Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder, would be held hitless by Sabathia. David Robertson would get the eighth inning and would escape a jam with runners on the corners and one out with a shallow flyball and a strikeout. To get work in, Mariano Rivera took the ninth inning with a seven-run lead. He gave up two soft singles and what could have been a run-scoring play, that Brett Gardner turned into a fantastic play in deep right center field. Rivera would strikeout Torii Hunter to end the game.

Ichiro Suzuki and Francisco Cervelli would bring in some extra insurance runs in the eighth inning. Kevin Youkilis would also bring in two in the ninth inning in a two-hit effort today.
