Yankees game 7: Drew goes grand in win

New York Yankees 6 — Baltimore Orioles 5

The unexpected would come true in the series opener in the visit to the Baltimore Orioles.

The Yankees had their first matchup with the Baltimore Orioles and Michael Pineda took the mound for the Yankees. He would pitch a scoreless first inning and received some early offense to back him up.

After getting two outs, Chris Young would take Wei-Yin Chen deep for his second home run of the season. Looking to shut down the Orioles after the Yankees scored, Pineda would be unsuccessful.

Adam Jones started the inning with an infield single. One out later, Manny Machado would hit a ground ball down the third base line, past third baseman Alex Rodriguez and the Orioles got the run back to tie it at one. Jonathan Schoop would follow with a double of his own, giving the Orioles the lead.

In the fourth inning, Mark Teixeira would hit a solo home run with two outs, tying the game back at two.

The Orioles and Yankees would be tied at two until the sixth inning.

Alejandro De Aza started the bottom half of the sixth inning with a double. Then with two outs, Adam Jones would get a hold of an inside fastball and took Pineda deep for a two-run home run, his third of the season.

Tommy Hunter took over for Chen in the seventh inning but was not good out of the bullpen. Chris Young started the inning with a single to left field. J.R. Murphy walked to put two on base. With two outs, Jacoby Ellsbury would hit an infield single and one of the last batters Yankees fans wanted coming up to the plate would be.

Earlier in tonight’s game, Brett Gardner was hit in the right wrist by a pitch and as a result, he was taken out of the game in the seventh inning with pinch-hitter Stephen Drew.

With the bases loaded, Drew would get ahead of the count and with a 3-1 count, Stephen Drew would hit his second home run in as many days. The second home run of the season for Drew would be a grand slam to turn a two-run deficit to a two-run lead.

Pineda would return to the mound for the seventh inning. He would give up a pair of singles around a strikeout as Dellin Betances would come in for relief. Betances would struggle, giving up a single to Caleb Joseph. De Aza would ground into a force out, but the Orioles pulled within one. Pearce would walk but Betances would get out of the jam with a strikeout of Chris Davis.

In 6 1/3 innings, Michael Pineda allowed five runs on nine hits while walking none and striking out nine.

Dellin Betances would return for the eighth inning and Adam Jones started the inning with a single. He would be caught stealing before a walk by Travis Snider would cue the end of Betances’ day. Andrew Miller took the mound against his former team for a five-out save. Miller would strike out the first two batters he faced, ending the inning. Andrew Miller would allow one to reach in the ninth but would get three outs, and the Yankees second win in a row to open the series with the Baltimore Orioles.
