Yanks interested in free-agent catcher Tyler Flowers

In a quiet offseason thus far for the Yankees, things may start to heat up now that Winter Meetings are under way. According to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, the team is interested in Tyler Flowers to serve as the teams backup catcher to Brian McCann.

With several teams in play for Flowers, the veteran catcher is said to be deciding between the Yankees, Braves, and the Rays.

Last season, Flowers hit .239 with nine homeruns and drove in 39 runs in 112 games played. He has spent his entire seven year career with the White Sox. Seeing sporadic playing time throughout his career with the Sox, he saw more at-batsย in the last two seasons combing for 26 homers and 89 RBI.ย

Young catching prospect Gary Sanchez had a promising season this year, hitting .274/.330/.485 with 18 homeruns and 62 RBI. In the Arizona fall league, he hit his way to a .295 average while belting seven homers and driving in 21 runs in just 88 at-bats. The promising catcher has made his case to back up McCann for the upcoming season, but the team may want to continue groom his skills in the minors.ย

McCann is entering his age 32 season, including his third year of a five year deal with the Yankees. Sanchez is being groomed to be the starter in the near future, but at the moment the team may want to go with a proven veteran as the backup to McCann.ย
