Yankees Player of the Week: June 24-June 30

Cano hit .429, with a .500 OBP to lead the Yankees offense during a 1-5 week.

In yet another dark, dismal week for the Yankees, the lone bright spot was that Robinson Cano finally came out of his batting slump to hit .429 on the week, with a .500 OBP. With 9 hits, including a home run, 3 RBI’s, and 3 runs scored. After barely beating the Texas Rangers in the series opener, thanks to a game winning home run by Ichiro, the Yankees would go on to lose 5 straight thanks to a series sweep by the AL East rival Baltimore Orioles.

Cano started the week with a .276 batting average. Thanks to his 9-hit week, he saw his average jump 11 points to end the week at .287. Unfortunately, Cano’s big game of the week came in a 4-3 loss to the Orioles on Friday night. He ended the night hitting 3-for-5, with an RBI and a run scored. The Yankees continue struggling in key situations, and until they start thriving in those situations, they are going to be in for a long final half of the season. The remaining 14 games before the All Star Game are very important for the Yankees to get back on track. Of those 14 games, the Yankees are playing 11 of them against sub-.500 teams, the Twins and Royals.

Honorable Mention:

  1. Ichiro Suzuki (.292 BA; 7 H; 1 HR; 1 SB; .903 OPS)
  2. Brett Gardner (.280 BA; 7 H; 3 2B; 1 HR, 3 RBI)
  3. Boone Logan (0.00 ERA; 2 IP; 4 Ks; 0.00 WHIP)
  4. Phil Hughes (2.25 ERA; 8 IP; 5 H; 0.75 WHIP)
  5. Chris Stewart (.385 BA; .467 OBP; 2 2B; 1.005 OPS)
