Yanks interested in Cuban right-hander

Dalier Hinojosa defected from Cuba this past February

The Yankees are said to be one of a few teams interested in recently defected Cuban pitcher Dalier Hinojosa, according to Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com. The 27-year-old, 6-foot-2, 210-pound righty has gone through the process of becoming a free-agent, and is ready to negotiate and sign with Major League ballclubs.

The Cubs, Dodgers and Red Sox are also those listed as vying for Hinojosa’s services. He features a fastball that’s clocked in the low-to-mid 90’s, with a slider, curve, two-seam fastball and changeup.

Hinojosa is no stranger to the big stage, as he played on the Guantanamo Indios in the Serie Nacional, Cuba’s top baseball league. He threw a seven-inning mercy-rule perfect game againstย  Sri Lanka, striking out 16 along the way in the World University Championships in August 2010. A few months later, he tossed another shortened perfecto in five innings against Hong Kong in the International Cup.

You can never have too much pitching, so Hinojosa looks to be a sought-after commodity this summer. It’s unsure how he will translate into the majors, but he could be worth taking a look at.
