As the farewell tour takes a day off today, the Yankee legend will be enjoying his birthday. Derek Jeter will celebrate his 40th birthday today not in front of a crowd of fans, but instead in private with friends and family. That won’t stop fans from across the country from sending Jeter a plethora of birthday wishes.

Turning 40 might just be another number for him, he certainly isn’t over thinking the fact that he is one year older. Here’s what he said about turning 40 via WFAN/CBS Sports.

“I really don’t sit down and look at my age and try to adjust or compare, “I’ve just never done that. I figure I probably shouldn’t start now.”

“I think the mind is very important and if you start thinking that way, that’s when you’re in trouble,” he said. “My mindset is to treat (40) no differently than any other age. That’s just how I cope with it. If you sit around and start talking about how you’re getting older, then I think mentally you cause yourself some problems.”

“It’s like turning any other number,” Jeter said. “I don’t really pay much attention to numbers, so it’s no different to me.”

We could go on and on right about his career accomplishments of this future first ballot Hall of Fame player, but the five-time World Series champion, 13-time All Star, five-time Gold Glove winner and the World Series MVP still has half a season of games left to play. He will certainly be looking to add to his laundry list of records and accomplishments before it’s all said and done. If the Yankees are good enough to get him that one final, well that’s a different story.

Make no mistake, Jeter knows that he’s a 40-year-old starting shortstop for the New York Yankees, but it’s not going to change the way this legend will continue to play the game. He might not be the .300 hitter he once was, but is still productive. So far Jeter has missed all but 10 games this season. After last night’s game Jeter is sporting a .268/.324/.327 slash with two homers and 17 RBI. He is also currently leading the American League in All-Star votes at shortstop. Chances are MLB will probably have some kind of special tribute planned for Jeter at the midsummer classic at Target Field.

But for now today we just want to want wish Derek Jeter 40th happy birthday.
