Sterling, Waldman inducted to NYS Broadcasters Hall of Fame

In April, the Board of Directors of the NYS Broadcasters Association announced its inductees for this year’s Hall of Fame class, two of which were New York Yankees broadcast partners John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman.  On Friday, Sterling and Waldman were inducted into the New York State Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame.

2016 marks the twelfth season the duo has shared broadcasting duties for the Yankees.  Both rank high in length of tenure as radio broadcasters with New York.  Sterling is second-longest behind Phil Rizzuto by three seasons (30 to 27), where Waldman currently ranks eighth, but will match Red Barber for seventh following their two-year contract with WFAN.

Sterling began his career with WMCA as a talk show host in 1971, becoming the radio voice for the New York Raiders (WHA), New York Stars (WFL), New York Islanders (NHL), and the New York/New Jersey Nets (ABA/NBA).

He has been the radio voice for the Yankees for quite some time, having called games since the 1989 season.  This season marks his 28th consecutive season in the booth, and he is nearing his 5,000th consecutive Yankees broadcast.

Sterling is also a 12-time Emmy Award winner from hosting the YES Network’s Yankeeography series.

Waldman has been “the first” many of times over her 30-year career.  She is a true pioneer for women in broadcasting. She became the first female voice heard on WFAN in 1987, the first woman to work on a nationally televised baseball broadcast, and first female color commentator in the Major Leagues, highlighting the Baseball Hall of Fame’s “Women in Baseball” exhibit in 2006.

Fans know Sterling and Waldman by their flair, tireless banter and corny home-run calls, usually preceded by Sterling’s classic “It is high, it is far, it is gone!”  But that is why we love them and continue to listen to them.  You can’t predict baseball.

Both Sterling and Waldman have been honored by multiple organizations and awards throughout their careers.  A congratulations to John and Suzyn on a well-deserved induction in the Hall of Fame Class of 2016.
