Tyler Wade found out the Yankees drafted him on TV

Last week, Yankees infielder/outfielder Tyler Wade joined us on The Bronx Pinstripes Show (@YankeesPodcast).

Tyler talked about his Arizona Fall League experience playing outfield for the first time, the upcoming Spring Training and being drafted by the team he rooted for a kid, the New York Yankees.

Tyler discusses his emotions on draft day at the 32:25 mark.

The 2013 MLB Draft happened to coincide with Tyler’s high school graduation.

“It was crazy because I was graduating and I had to have my phone on me because I was waiting for teams to call in the second round,” Wade said.

Instead, no one called, leaving the newly-minted graduate to wait idly by the phone for another day. The next morning, something unexpected happened.

Wade was supposed to get a phone call from his agent first, alerting him on where he was selected. “I heard my name on TV,” he said. “The fourth round comes around and it’s the Yankees pick and I don’t get a phone call, and I’m like, ‘what the heck is going on?’ I hear my name and thinking, ‘am I hearing things? Is this really happening?'”

Wade’s agent finally called with the news, saying that he wanted it to feel real for Tyler.

Imagine being an 18-year old kid who just graduated high school, and then you hear your name called at the MLB draft by the New York Yankees? I don’t know if there could be a more surreal moment. After he took a minute to collect his thoughts, Tyler celebrated by buying a brand new Yankees hat.
