Royals win World Series; remind me of the 90’s Yankees

Lots of people today are saying the Mets lost the World Series, thus taking credit away from the Royals. Of the 53 innings played, the Mets led for 43 and yet somehow still lost 4 out of 5 games. They made 6 crucial errors and even more mental errors, like Cespedes getting doubled off first to end game 4. Their bullpen crumbled under pressure and their bats went silent. On the surface, that sounds like they lost the series. But when you look at what KC did the entire month of October you realize they took it from the Mets, and deserve all the credit.

More than any other team over the past fifteen years, the 2015 Royals remind me of the late 1990’s Yankees. Those Yankees teams never gave up. If you opened the door an inch, they blew it open and took a mile. One through nine in the order they had guys that were clutch and could hit the ball all over the field. They were aggressive, grinded-out at bats that led to late inning wins, had a lights-out bullpen that could compete with any team in baseball, and made you beat them. The Yankees had Tino Martinez, the Royals have Eric Hosmer. The Yankees had Bernie Williams, the Royals have Lorenzo Cain. The Yankees had veterans like Paul O’Neill and Scott Brosius, the Royals have Alex Rios and Ben Zobrist.

No, not all of those players are one-for-one comparisons, but as a whole the teams are very similar. Obviously the big difference is the Yankees had Jeter, Mariano, Posada, and Pettitte, which kept the run going for close to two decades. Do the Royals have that in them? No, probably not. But I think they’re going to be a team to be reckoned with for the next couple of years. You’ll see veterans want to play in KC for a chance to win. They are going to go from that underdog team we all pulled for the past two seasons to that annoying thorn in your side. Sure that little stunt Royals fans pulled this All Star game was cute, but it’s not going to be funny in 2016 now that they have hoisted the WS trophy. So let me send sincere congratulations Kansas City… and thank you for beating the Mets, but I’m afraid it’s about time to hate you.
