Adam Warren Likely the Fifth Man

The fifth starter merry-go-round is coming to a stop and Adam Warren is getting off. He is the clear favorite to be in the rotation come opening day. “Right now if we had to make a decision today, we all know what the decision would be,’’ Brian Cashman said Wednesday. “There is a Secretariat in the race. Right now Warren has a big lead in this. We don’t have to make that decision today. When you are running the race someone is ahead of the field, but it can change drastically. As of right now if we had to make a call today, it would be Warren.’’

Esmil Rogers, Chase Whitley and Bryan Mitchell were all up for consideration after Chris Capuano landed himself on the DL. Mitchell will most likely head back to the minors and Whitley will be in the pen. Rodgers was having a nice spring and making a case for himself, but after a five hit, five run, three inning beating Tuesday against the Tigers, he will likely land in the pen.

Warren will be making his fifth start against the Rays today. In 13 innings this spring, he has given up 13 hits, struck out six and hasn’t allowed a walk. He appeared in 69 games last season going 3-6 with a 2.97 ERA.
