Michael Pineda had been moving along quite well over his first three rehab starts (not including a simulated game) compiling a 0.63 ERA and 11/4 K/BB ratio in 14 1/3 innings. However, he was roughed up in a start with Trenton against the Double- A Binghamton Mets this afternoon.
Pineda lasted only three innings, giving up four runs on four hits while surrendering four walks. He threw 67 pitches, which comes as a disappointment because the Yankees were hoping he could reach 100 before he’s activated – he hasn’t thrown over 85 pitches in any of his appearances yet. With only eight days left in his rehab assignment, an option to Triple-A might be necessary in order to build up his pitch count. In the meantime, the Yankees will hope that a struggling rotation will right itself heading into July.
Overall, Pineda, 24, has done well in his rehab for a guy coming off major shoulder surgery. We’ll see him in the Bronx this season – it just might not be as soon as we hoped at the beginning of June.
