Warren headed to the bullpen

The Yankees have made a decision on what to do with their crowded rotation, and it appears that Adam Warren is headed to the bullpen.

According to beat writer Mark Feinsand, Warren informed the Daily News after Monday night’s game that he won’t be making his next scheduled start on Wednesday. Nathan Eovaldi will get the ball instead on regular rest.

Warren figured to be the odd man out, even though he’s been one of the more consistent starters for the Yankees this year. He’s currently 5-5 with a 3.59 ERA in 14 starts which span over 82.2 innings – a career high. The Yankees want to limit his innings going forward.

The Yankees are filling a few needs by placing Warren in the pen. For most of the season, they’ve been trying to find another reliable right-handed reliever not named Dellin Betances. Warren has excelled in the past coming on in relief, most notably last year when he appeared in 69 games and struck out 76 in 78.2 innings pitched while accumulating a 2.97 ERA.

When Andrew Miller comes back, Joe Girardi will have a three-headed monster at his disposal with Warren possibly slotting into the seventh inning, Betances in the eighth and Miller closing. Add Chasen Shreve and Justin Wilson into the mix, and the bullpen becomes a major strength again.

It may not be the most popular move, considering how others in the rotation have pitched this season, but Warren is the only one in the bunch who has experience coming out of the pen. If anything, he’s proved toΒ the Yankees that he can be relied upon to start every fifth day in the future.
