Yankees name opening day starter

The New York Yankees officially announced their first four starters for the 2015 season, and it will the first time since 2009 that CC Sabathia isn’t pitching on opening day.

Manager Joe Girardi named Masahiro Tanaka his opening day starter for the team’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium on April 6. The 26-year-old impressed in his first season in pinstripes, posting a 13-5 record with a 2.77 ERA. Tanaka did miss time last season due to a ligament tear in his pitching elbow, but the Yankees are hopeful that Tanaka is healthy and ready to go for the 2015 campaign.

As for the rest of the rotation, Michael Pineda will serve as the No. 2 starter, with Sabathia slotting in as the No. 3 guy, with both guys making their first starts of the season against the Blue Jays. Newly-acquired Nathan Eovaldi will figure in as the team’s No. 4 starter, and he is projected to makeΒ his first start on April 10th against the Boston Red Sox.

Being that Chris Capuano is injured, the team has yet to announce who the No. 5 starter will be. As of now, all signs lead to Adam Warren getting the nod, as general manager Brian Cashman called him the “Secretariat” of the competition.
