Yanks will skip Pineda’s next start

The Yankees announced earlier Friday that Michael Pineda‘s next start will be skipped in an attempt to cut down on his innings limit. Pineda was originally scheduled to pitch this Sunday against the Angels. CC Sabathia will get the start instead.

With three days off between June 4-11, the Yankees figured this was a good time to give Pineda some extra rest. The 25 year-old righty was on pace for 220 innings, something manager Joe Girardi called “unacceptable.”

Pineda is having his best year as a major leaguer so far, and also his healthiest. The Yankees want to make sure those trends continue. He underwent major shoulder surgery shortly after he was acquired from the Mariners in 2012. Pineda’s next start will come in Baltimore on Friday, June 12. His highest innings total in the big leagues was 171 during his rookie year in 2011.

Pineda is currently 7-2 with a 3.33 ERA in 11 starts this year.
