Bird is the Word – The Bronx Pinstripes Show #30

A lot has happened this past week. The Yankees fell back out of first place while sweeping Minnesota but lost 3 of 4 to Cleveland. Scott and I cover all the news, including the CC, Teixeira, and Bryan Mitchell injuries, and the announcement that Big Mike will make his return from the DL. We also talk about Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte getting their numbers retired and if the Yankees organization is going overboard with these ceremonies.

It has been a rough week for CC; first a video surfaced last Monday on TMZ of him getting into an altercation outside of a Toronto night club. Then he suffered an injury on Sunday in the 3rd inning, and is likely to land on the DL. After the game he was quoted as saying that he injured his knee because he was giving it all out on the field and tried to ramp up on a fastball to get out of a jam. Its been an up and (mostly) down year for CC, and this is potentially the low point for him. The plan was to go to a 6 man rotation when Pineda returns but with CC going on the DL that plan is up in the air.

Teixeira also suffered an injury last Monday when he fouled a ball off his shin. He left the game and was seen walking on crutches all week. Tex has not been placed on the DL so the hope is for him to return this week, and they were probably just being cautious with him because he is so important to their lineup. With ARod struggling they need Tex back in the cleanup spot.

There was some good news for the team this week however. Greg Bird’s official coming out party was Wednesday, when he hit two 2-run HRs in the win over Minnesota and was the entire Yankees offense that day. The rookie looks to be polished on and off the field, and Yankees fans should be excited for Bird’s future.

Scott and I break down all the games but for full recaps you can see the Minnesota series recap here and the Cleveland series recap here.
