On Monday, Girardi said that it is not a given Tanaka will get the Opening Day start. There are a couple ways to look at this. One, Girardi is lighting a fire under the inconsistent Tanaka. Even though it is easy to brush spring training struggles aside, Tanaka needs to prove he’s ready for the season. Another reason may be that the team knows Tanaka could use an extra start in extended spring training, which could also allow for a hybrid 5/6 man rotation. We talk about these possibilities as well a expectations for the rest of the rotation on this week’s episode.
