Donnie and I discuss the mystery that is Rob Refsnyder. Donnie has seen Ref play in Triple-A since the beginning, and by his estimates, he’s been a big-league caliber hitter for well over a year. We both agree that his defense is not anything special, but he is athletic and made a lot of good plays at second base when he was with the Yankees at the end of 2015. If given the opportunity, he can play a solid second base while providing well above-average offense.

Unfortunately, Donnie does not see Refsnyder ever making it as a third baseman because he does not seem to have the instincts for the hot corner. The Yankees organization has already changed his position from outfield to second base, so asking him to move again is risky to his long-term development and value. If anything, Ref could be a super utility player who can give the team value at second base and the corner outfield positions. At this point however it seems the Yankees have no choice but to move on from Rob Refsnyder.
