After following up a five-game losing streak with two straight victories against the Angels, the Yankees took a step back this afternoon in their series finale with California. They were shutout by Chuck Finley and co. 4-0.

Finley went 7.1 innings, striking out nine and allowing just four hits – all singles. He gave way to Mike James and closer Troy Percival who finished out the game. Derek Jeter had two of the Yankees’ four hits on the day, bringing his average up to .307

Kenny Rogers started for New York, and turned in another mediocre performance. He gave up four runs – all of which came in the third  – over six innings. The big blow was a three-run home run off the bat of Tim Salmon which gave California their four-run lead.

Fortunately, Baltimore lost to the Mariners 5-1, so the Yankees’ division lead remains at four games. New York will get a huge boost tomorrow, as David Cone returns to a big league mound for the first time since May. He’ll face Ariel Prieto and the Oakland A’s as the Yankees continue their west coast swing.
