The Yankees split a doubleheader against the Orioles today, but took two out of three from the overall in the series. In game one, Kenny Rogers turned in 5.2 innings and gave up just three hits, helping the Yankees win 9-3. Rogers walked four, however, which contributed to his high pitch count. He was relieved by Brian Boehringer – who allowed three runs – and Jeff Nelson, who closed out the game with 1.1 scoreless innings.

The Yankees offense in game one was lead by Mariano Duncan, who went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs. Derek Jeter chipped in with two RBI, with Tim Raines, Wade Boggs, Jim Leyritz and Cecil Fielder each adding RBIs as well.

Game 1 line score:

In game two, with the game tied at seven in the eighth inning, Mariano Rivera allowed three runs on four hits which gave Baltimore a 10-7 lead. The Yankees made a comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth when Bernie Williams hit a two-run homer, but the Yankees ultimately lost 10-9. David Cone started for New York, and had his first bad outing since returning from surgery in August. He went five innings and surrendered six runs on six hits while walking five, his control clearly not what it usually is.

Cecil Fielder and Bernie Williams each hit two home runs, and drove in a combined seven runs. Luis Sojo knocked in two with a double in the fourth inning.

The Yankees now hold a more comfortable four-game lead in the division after this series with the Orioles. There are just 10 games remaining in the regular season.
