Yankees officially sign Ike Davis, DFA Layne Somsen

Update – Tuesday 8:55 AM

The team has officially inked Ike Davis to a Major League contract and added him to the 25-man roster. To make room for the latest first baseman, RHP Layne Somsen has been designated for assignment and Chad Green has been optioned back to Scranton.

Somsen was claimed off waivers from Cincinnati back in May and assigned to the Railriders. He posted a 1.44 ERA with 10.4 K/9 and 4.33 BB/9 in 25 Triple-A innings between the Reds and Yankees.

Green pitched one scoreless inning on Sunday against the Tigers.

The Yankees are on the verge of signing first baseman Ike Davis, according to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News.

Davis, 29, exercised an opt-out clause with the Texas Rangers on Sunday morning, after hitting .268/.350/.437 with Triple-A Round Rock in 39 games this season. He would assume the platoon role at first base with Rob Refsnyder, who has started only six career games at the corner bag.

Updates of Davis’ status with New York are to come.
