Series Recap: Yankees Subway sweep Mets back to 7 train

Making the most of their power hitting and power pitching, the New York Yankees sent the New York Mets back onto the 7 train with a big brother beatdown. Hence, the Yankees were able to claim the Bronx portion of the Subway Series with a two-game mini sweep.

GAME 1

Power ball was the name of the game as the Yankees doubled up the Mets 4-2 in the first game of their home portion of the Subway Series.

THROWAWAY THIRD

Former Mets farmhand Luis Cessa looked pretty decent and aggressive on the bump in the early going. Aside from yielding solo bombs to Curtis Granderson and Yoenis Cespedes during the third, Cessa was in command with five strikeouts. Yet, in the fifth, Cessa appeared to tweak his ribcage and was placed on the 10-day disabled list following the game.

GOOD LORDY NO. 40

After a fourth inning Gary Sanchez sac fly RBI cut the lead to 2-1, the Bronx Bombers teed off against Rafael Montero and company.

Aaron Judge delivered the equalizer was a jolt to right in the sixth.

Aaron Hicks launched a smoke shot to right against Hansel Robles in the eighth.

Later in the frame, Sanchez took Erik Goeddel deep to right.

The respective home runs all marked career home run No. 40 for each player.

POWER PEN

The pinstriped pen returned to its dominant form. Chad Green fanned four across 2.2 frames of scoreless ball. David Robertson whiffed the side during a flawless eighth. Dellin Betances recorded save number seven with a clean ninth.

GAME 2

In completing their series sweep with a 5-4 victory, the Yankees gave Sonny Gray plenty of run support for his first victory in pinstripes.

CLIMBING JACOB’S LADDER

The lone remaining bright spot in the Mets rotation has been Jacob deGrom but the Bronx Bombers were able to jump all over him.

Hicks continued to propel the New York offense during the third with an RBI-single to right.

In the ensuing frame, Jacoby Ellsbury sent a seat seeking missile to right, increasing the Bronx Bombers advantage to 3-0.

During the sixth, Sanchez, who would provide the club with a decidedly needed insurance run in the eighth, smoked a solo bomb to left to make it 4-0 Yankees.

GRAY’S ANATOMY OF PITCHES

As mentioned above, Gray had everything working, mixing his assortment of different grips and pitches. Gray weaved his way through the orange and blue, fanning five through six frames. His only blemish on the evening was yielding a two-run homer to left by Dominic Smith in the seventh.

CHAPMAN SHAKY AGAIN

Back on the bump in the ninth, Aroldis Chapman held on for save No. 16 but it wasn’t pretty. A two-run homer to right by Amed Rosario pulled the Mets within one at 5-4.

ON DECK

At 63-55, the Yankees hop on the 7 train and play the New York Mets in the Queens portion of the Subway Series with a two-game set starting Wednesday night.
