Series Recap: Yankees finish off Subway sweep of Mets

A lot of times throughout the grind of a long season one of the keys is when you play a team on your schedule and then capitalizing. Hence, the New York Yankees took care of business, stomping on the throats and claiming their first sweep of the New York Mets since 2003.

GAME 1

As the Subway Series shifted across town, the Bronx Bombers made themselves right at home in a 5-3 victory in Queens.

LAGUARDIA LAUNCH

After each squad scratched out a run apiece in the first two innings, Aaron Judge absolutely destroyed an offering from Robert Gsellman during the fourth frame.

The solo blast to left was No. 37 on his rookie campaign, traveling 457 feet with an exit velocity of 117 mph. Mets left fielder Yoenis Cespedes didn’t even give the ball a courtesy look, not that he had any time to watch it fly out.

MORE BACK AND FORTH

Jaime Garcia essentially pitched to the scoreboard and gave the Yankees some needed length, laboring into the sixth.

After a Rene Rivera home run to left squared the game at two in the fifth, each club traded runs via the sacrifice fly off the bats of Chase Headley and Travis d’Arnaud respectively in the sixth.

CLUTCH DIDI

Facing reliever Paul Sewald in the seventh, the Yankees would stage yet another rally. Ronald Torreyes set the table with a double to left. Ensuing batter Brett Gardner moved Torreyes to third with a sacrifice bunt. A walk to Jacoby Ellsbury and a controversial walk to Aaron Hicks would load the bases.

Following a pop out by Judge, Didi Gregorius delivered by ripping a clutch two-out, two-run double off the wall in right, staking New York to a 5-3 advantage.

PARTY LIKE IT’S 2014

With Aroldis Chapman and Dellin Betances deemed unavailable, manager Joe Girardi reverted to Adam Warren and David Robertson to finish off the Mets. The two didn’t skip a beat.

Warren fanned three across two scoreless frames. According to Katie Sharp, Warren is pitching to a 0.65 ERA in 27.2 innings since May 27.

Robertson logged save No. 14 with two K’s in a flawless ninth. It was his first save in a Yankee uniform since Sept. 26, 2014, at Boston.

If you’re wondering, Goose Gossage once went about seven years between recording a save in his two stints with the organization.

GAME 2

The underbelly of the bullpen made it closer than it really was in garbage time. Staked to a 7-o lead, the Yankees held on for the series sweep with a 7-5 victory.

SENIOR AUGUSTO

Meet the Matz, greet the Matz, step right up and beat the Matz. It didn’t take long for the Bronx Bombers to overpower Steven Matz Thursday evening.

In the first, Brett Gardner reached second on a throwing error by Matz. Matz continued his wildness with a walk to Hicks. Then with one out, Gary Sanchez blasted a three-run bomb into the party zone in left.

CONNECT FOUR FOURTH

The Yankees offense returned for more in the fourth. Tyler Austin, who garnered a two-hit night in his return to the roster, set the table with a single to right. Ensuing batter Ronald Torreyes followed with a single to left. Luis Severino took the baton and reached on a bunt single.

With the bases packed, Gardner lashed a two-run double to left, boosting the New York lead to 5-0. After a Hicks groundout and a Judge hit by pitch, Matz sent to the showers.

Facing Chasen (yes, there were two Chasen’s used in this game) Bradford, Sanchez came through again with a two-run single to left, adding the touchdown and extra point.

SEVY SNAPBACK

Yes, he was facing the Mets lineup but it was positive to see Severino back on track. The Yanks ace fanned nine across 6.1 frames and recorded his tenth victory of the campaign.

BET ON BETANCES

Some sloppiness in the seventh, coupled with a Curtis Granderson grand slam in the ninth meant the Yankees had to call upon another closer caliber reliever and Betances was the man up this time. The All-Star reliever stopped the bleeding and registered his eighth save with a spotless frame.

ON DECK

At 65-55, the Yankees travel to Boston toΒ face the Boston Red Sox with a three-game set starting Friday night.

Pitching probables Jordan Montgomery vs. Drew Pomeranz, CC Sabathia vs. Chris Sale, Sonny Gray vs. Doug Fister.
