Series Recap: Yankees take two from Royals

Back in the Bronx, the New York Yankees appeared much more comfortable hosting the Kansas City Royals. With the final game being rained out, the Yanks took two of three and were one bad inning away from completing a sweep.

GAME 1

In their return to Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Bombers used power hitting and power pitching to secure a 4-2 victory in doubling up the Royals.

PINEDA’S PLACE

Michael Pineda loves pitching at the big ballpark in the Bronx. Despite yielding a third inning home run to Jorge Bonifacio, the Yankees’ starter was on point. Pineda fanned six batters across 6.2 frames of work.

CONSTANT GARDNER

How hot has Brett Gardner been in the early going? After eclipsing his home run total from 2016 in Tampa, Gardner went deep for the second time in as many games. Gardy’s third inning blast off Jason Vargas was his ninth of the campaign and pulled New York within one.

GREGORIUS GLORIOUS

Speaking of scorching, Didi Gregorius is scalding the baseball. During the fourth, Sir Didi socked a two-run shot to right, giving the Yankees a 3-2 advantage they’d never relinquish.

CARTER CRUSH

For good measure Chris Carter smacked a solo shot to left in the seventh off Seth Maness, doubling the lead.

DELLIN DEALIN’

He’ll be selling a lot more tickets if he keeps this up. Dellin Betances flushed the Royals with a scoreless ninth, recording his third save of the season.

GAME 2

The second game saw the Yankees use much of the same formula from the first game but let it get away late in a 6-2 loss to the Royals. Every run came via the home run Tuesday evening.

HOMER YANKEES

This time around it appeared as though the Bronx Bombers would get the best of Danny Duffy. Aaron Hicks sent a solo seat screamer to right in the fourth, for his eighth of the campaign. An inning later Cater would double the lead to 2-0 with a homer to left, his fourth and second in as many games.

GUMBY’S THE PAL FOR YOU

He’s here and he will be sure to stay, Gumby! Jordan Montgomery looked sharp and deserved better than a no-decision. Montgomery’s ledger included six K’s, yielding only two hits and one run across 6.2 frames. A home run to left by Lorenzo Cain, was the lone blip on the rookie lefty’s radar.

GOOFY ADAM WARREN

In a previous post, I wrote about Chad Green moving up in the pecking order and it might be time to bump him up a notch. While the Yankees don’t miss a beat with Betances filling in for Aroldis Chapman in the ninth, the chain reaction is felt further down in the pen.

A home run to left by Bonifacio, his second in as many contests, gave KC a 3-2 lead.

During the eighth, Whit Merrifield took Jonathan Holder deep to right and Mike Moustakas hit a two-run shot to right off Chasen Shreve.

GAME 3

In a bounce back effort, the Yankees rode defense, pitching and timely hitting to a 3-0 victory.

RINGING THE BELLS-BURY

During the first inning, Jacoby Ellsbury won the battle but lost the war with the wall in center-field. Alcides Escobar crushed a Luis Severino offering to deep center and Ellsbury went all out to make the catch and slammed into the wall. He would eventually have to leave the game and was placed on the seven-day disabled list with a concussion and strained neck.

CANDY CRUSH EMOJI

In the third inning, Gregorius provided the Bronx Bombers with all the offense they’d need, smacking a solo homer to right for his third of the season, off Jason Hammel.

The Yankees would add two more insurance runs on a Matt Holliday sac fly in the sixth and an RBI-single from Gardner in the seventh.

STELLAR SEVVY

Severino delivered a stellar outing, whiffing seven batters through eight scoreless frames, scattering four hits. With his power pitching, Severino finished strong and didn’t allow the Royals to get into the game as they had the night before, getting a huge double play ball in the seventh to end a KC threat.

BIG TICKET

Betances blazed on the bump, striking out the side to record his fourth save of the season.

GAME 4

No baseball for the Yankees and Royals on Thursday afternoon.

At 27-17 on the campaign, the Yankees play host to the Oakland Athletics in a three-game series starting Friday evening.
