Dellin Betances to debut Sunday

Dellin Betances will pitch in relief tomorrow afternoon against the Nationals at George M. Steinbrenner Field, according to beat writer Bryan Hoch. This will be the spring training debut for the 6 foot 8 inch righty.

Betances figures to be the team’s closer, although manager Joe Girardi has hinted at possibly going with a dual threat of Betances and lefty Andrew Miller. Miller will also pitch tomorrow.

Betances is coming off an eye-opening season in 2014 – one that rivals Mariano Rivera‘s in 1996. Betances went 5-0 with a 1.40 ERA, striking out 135 in 90 IP. He allowed just 46 hits and 14 earned runs.

When David Robertson signed with the White Sox this past winter, many thought the next in line to handle the closing duties would be Betances. He gets to make his first mark tomorrow afternoon.
