Spring Training Game 10: Capuano hurt, A-Rod homers

Boston Red Sox 10 — New York Yankees 6

Chris Capuano would exit today’s game after facing the first two batters after he injured himself when covering first base. Later, it would be revealed to be a right quad strain.

After solid work by Nick Rumbelow, in emergency duties after Capuano’s unexpected injury, and a perfect inning of work by Dellin Betances that featured two strikeouts, the wheels started to fall off the game.

In the third inning, Andrew Miller took the mound and gave up a solo home run to Travis Shaw. In one inning of work, Miller gave up one run on two hits while walking one and striking out none. In the bottom of the inning the Yankees would strike back against Joe Kelly and the Red Sox. Jose Pirela started the inning with a double to left field and then with two outs, Jacoby Ellsbury would bring home Pirela on a single to left field. Brett Gardner would walk and Carlos Beltran would hit a single to score the Yankees second two-out run of the inning, giving them a one-run lead.

Bryan Mitchell would follow Miller and it would be a day Mitchell wishes he could take back.

Three of the first four batters that Bryan Mitchell faced would hit a single, scoring one run. Travis Shaw would strike again against the Yankees with a double to center field, scoring two runs and giving the Red Sox the lead. Jeff Bianchi would hit a single of his own to extend the Red Sox lead to three. Mitchell would bounce back in his second inning of work, walking one and giving up a single but induced a double play to keep the Red Sox off the board.

In two innings, Bryan Mitchell allowed four runs on seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Surely what will be the talk of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning. On a 3-1 hitter’s count, Alex Rodriguez hit a fly ball to left-center field that would be deep enough to get over the wall for his first home run of the Spring and his first home run since 2013. The home run was received with mostly cheers with a scatter of boos sprinkled in.

In the seventh inning, Tyler Webb would give up a run on three hits. The Yankees would get that run back in the bottom of the inning on an error by third baseman Garin Cecchini.

In the eighth inning, Chris Martin would come in on relief and gives up three runs on three hits, including a two-run home run.

In the ninth inning, Slade Heathcott showed some late game life with a two-run home run into right field but the Yankees could not rally to overcome the large deficit.
