Spring Training Game 16: Sabathia debuts, Teixeira homers

Toronto Blue Jays 4 — New York Yankees 2

CC Sabathia made his first start of the spring in a home game against the Toronto Blue Jays. In the first inning, Sabathia made use of one of the strongest fielders the Yankees will send onto the field. With two ground outs to shortstop Didi Gregorius and a strikeout of Josh Donaldson, the Yankees’ left-hander had a strong first inning. The second inning did not go as well for Sabathia. After a single by Dioner Navarro, Sabathia would get two outs but the third would be a problem. Dayan Viciedo hit a deep double to center field to score the first run of the game. The second run would come on a single by Devon Travis. Josh Thole would hit the second double of the inning but Brett Gardner would prevent the third run from scoring with a strong throw to Gregorius who relayed it home for a great defensive play.

In two innings, CC Sabathia allowed two runs on four hits while walking none and striking out three.

The Yankees would get a one-out walk by Garrett Jones in the second inning. Chris Young would hit a single to left field and Stephen Drew hit a single to left too, plating the Yankees first run of the game.

In the third inning, Dellin Betances had another shaky appearance this spring. Jose Reyes started with a triple to center field. He would score on a ground out to get the run back. In his one inning of work, Betances allowed one run on two hits while walking one.

In the fourth inning, Mark Teixeira went the opposite way for his first home run of the spring.

In the fifth inning, Kyle Davies took over for the Yankees and the Blue Jays would score again. Jose Reyes hit a single and proved to be a problem on the bases. While stealing second base, Brian McCann would commit a throwing error when he hit the runner, allowing Reyes to advance to third. A ground out by Jose Bautista would bring home Reyes and the Blue Jays had a 4-2 lead.

Carlos Beltran hit an opposite field double to the left field corner in the first inning. Chris Young had two hits tonight and Jose Pirela continues to have a strong spring at the plate with a triple and a walk.
