Spring Training Game 18: Rogers struggles in loss

Philadelphia Phillies 7 — New York Yankees 3

Fifth starter candidate, Esmil Rogers, struggled in his showing against the Philadelphia Phillies. After getting the first two outs of the inning; Chase Utley hit a double and Ryan Howard would bring him around to score with a single to right field to give them the early lead. The second inning did not have a good start for Rogers who gave up a solo home run to Cody Asche to put the Phillies ahead by two.

The Yankees would get on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Chase Headley would continue to have a strong spring with his second home run of the spring, a solo blast assisted with some favorable winds to right field.

The Phillies would score a third run against Esmil Rogers in the third inning. In 3 1/3 innings, Esmil Rogers gave up three runs on five hits while walking one and striking out three.

Stephen Drew could have a bat that is heating up as he hit a run-scoring double in the third inning but the Yankees still trail. In the sixth inning, Didi Gregorius had a good showing at the plate. Working a full count, Gregorius would hit a single to center field off a left-handed pitcher. Stephen Drew would walk and Carlos Beltran would keep the line moving with a run-scoring single to tie the game at three.

The game would remain tied until the eighth inning when Darin Ruf led off the inning with a home run to right field off of Yankees pitcher Nick Goody. The Phillies would pull away in a long ninth inning. Against Chasen Shreve, Jordan Danks hit a run-scoring double and an error by Jose Pirela in center field brought in two runs. Chris Nelson followed with a single to score the third run of the inning. Shreve would get a pair of strikeouts to finish the inning but the damage was done.
