Spring Training Game 19: Early offense fuels win

New York Yankees 11 — Detroit Tigers 2

The New York Yankees traveled to visit the Detroit Tigers and made their impact right away. Against Alfredo Simon, Brett Gardner started the game with a triple to right field. Brendan Ryan made his first appearance in a game this spring and hit a double to left field to put the Yankees on the board two batters in. Brian McCann would hit a single to center field to bring home Brendan Ryan and the Yankees extended their lead to two. With two on and two out, Jose Pirela would hit a two-run double to left field, giving the Yankees a four-run lead. Rob Refsnyder, competing for a role on the major league team, would hit a two-run home run to left-center field to complete the team cycle in a six-run first inning.

Adam Warren was the beneficiary of the Yankees outburst in the first inning. He would allow a leadoff single but Warren erased that with a double play. Warren would generate a second double play in the second inning, keeping the Tigers off the board again.

In the fifth inning, fireball pitcher Bruce Rondon would strike out three of the four batters he faced but one batter got a hit off of him. Alex Rodriguez would go the opposite way with his second home run of the spring, giving the Yankees a seven-run lead.

The one big mistake that Adam Warren made in his start was in the fifth inning. Power hitter Yoenis Cespedes would lead off the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run to right field, putting the Tigers on the scoreboard. Warren would bounce back from the home run with three straight outs in a very strong outing.

In five innings, Adam Warren allowed one run on four hits while walking none and striking out three.

The Yankees would score three runs in the eighth inning, which included a two-run triple by Jonathan Galvez but the Yankees would never look back from the big first inning.
