Spring Training Game 22: Young goes deep twice

New York Yankees 6 — Washington Nationals 7

The New York Yankees went to visit the Washington Nationals in today’s spring training game. The Yankees got on the board first against Doug Fister in the third inning. Rob Refsnyder led off the inning with a double and with two ground outs; Refsnyder would come around to score. Chris Young would get on base the painful way, with a breaking ball off the knee but Brian McCann would make it easy to get around the bases. McCann would hit his second home run of the spring and the two-run home run gave the Yankees a three-run lead.

For the Yankees, Bryan Mitchell aimed to make his claim for the final spot in the starting rotation. After benefiting from facing a National League lineup, generating a double play from the pitcher with the bases loaded in the second, the same positive would turn negative in the fourth inning. A pair of singles would cue the end of Mitchell’s day after getting one out. Chasen Shreve would come in and the pitcher, Doug Fister, would hit a single to center field to put the Nationals on the board with two runs batted in. A single by Danny Espinosa and a two-run double by Ian Desmond off of Jose Ramirez would change the three-run Yankees lead into a one-run Yankees deficit.

In 3 1/3 innings, Bryan Mitchell allowed two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out two. While there were two errors committed with Mitchell on the mound, three walks is not an ideal showing from a pitcher looking to win a spot on the major league roster.

In the fifth inning, Chris Young would hit a no-doubt solo home run to left field, tying the game up at four. In the sixth inning, Chris Young liked the first home run so much he did it again, the second home run coming with one on and recovering the Yankees lead.

With Kyle Davies on the mound in the seventh inning, Ian Desmond would draw a one-out walk and Bryce Harper would hit a single to put runners on the corners. An error on a pickoff attempt would bring a run in to score. A pair of doubles would give the Nationals back the lead, 7-6. The Yankees would be unable to retrieve the lead one more time and the Yankees lost a see-saw affair on the road.

Rob Refsnyder was perfect at the plate today, with two hits, one for a double, and a walk.
