Spring Training Game 24: Tanaka Ks 7 in defeat

New York Mets 7 — New York Yankees 2

Masahiro Tanaka got the start for the home edition of the spring training Subway Series. Juan Lagares started the game with a double to left field. A throwing error on an attempted steal of third base would go into left field, allowing Lagares to score and give the Mets the early one-run lead.

After being held scoreless through the first two innings, Didi Gregorius got the third inning started with a ground-rule double to right field. Two outs later and Chase Headley continued his hot spring. A double by Headley tied the game at one.

Tanaka would make two significant mistakes in what could be his final start before the regular season. The second poor pitch of the start came in the third inning with one out. On a hanging breaking ball, John Mayberry Jr. put the pitch over the left field wall for the Mets second run of the game and giving the Mets back the lead. Tanaka would get two more outs in the fifth inning before being removed from the game with one on.

Dellin Betances has not had a good spring and today continued the struggles. Betances would give up a two-run home run on the first batter he faced, extending the Mets lead to three. He would get the last out but the line on Tanaka would be complete. In 4 2/3 innings, Masahiro Tanaka allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits while walking one and striking out seven.

After the one-out outing by Betances, Andrew Miller would come on in the sixth inning. Miller would have an inauspicious start, hitting the first batter with a pitch. A pair of singles later and the Mets added another run on the board. Justin Wilson would finish the inning with a double play.

For 2/3 of an inning, the favorites for the closer title, Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller, allowed two runs and one inherited runner to score on three hits without a strikeout. Not a good day for the backend of the Yankees bullpen.

In the eighth inning, the Mets would plate their sixth run of the game with a two-out double to left field. A pair of doubles in the ninth inning made it a six-run lead for the Mets. In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Yankees would score one run but would fall well short of the Mets in today’s loss.
