Spring Training Game 27: Baker knocked around by O’s

Baltimore Orioles 10 — New York Yankees 2

Scott Baker, outside candidate for the fifth starter’s spot, could not be pleased with the outing he had against the visiting Baltimore Orioles.

After a scoreless first inning, Scott Baker struggled against the Orioles. After a leadoff single, a pair of one-out singles would load the bases. Ryan Flaherty would hit a sacrifice fly to give the Orioles the first run of the game. Jonathan Schoop would hit the fourth single of the inning and scored the second run of the game. A three-run home run by Alejandro De Aza would highlight a five-run second inning that put the Yankees in an early deficit.

In just two innings, Scott Baker allowed five runs on five hits while walking none and striking out three. This is not a good impression to make this late into spring training.

Jacob Lindgren would give up a run on a sacrifice fly. In the fifth inning, the Yankees would finally find their way onto the scoreboard. With two outs in the inning, Stephen Drew would hit a line drive home run right over the right field wall. Another sacrifice fly by the Baltimore Orioles in the sixth inning against Chasen Shreve would get the run back.

In the seventh inning, Alex Rodriguez would open the inning with a bang. His third home run of this spring went deep to left field as the Yankees second run of the game. The Yankees would give up two more runs over the final two innings as they lost to the Orioles.

In the second inning, shortstop Didi Gregorius injured his left wrist on a dive for one of the singles surrendered by Baker. Gregorius was removed from the game later for precautionary x-rays. Andrew Bailey made an appearance in today’s game and pitched a scoreless inning as he continues his pursuit for a spot in the Yankees’ bullpen.
