Spring Training Game 33: Early runs costly for CC

Washington Nationals 8 — New York Yankees 2

CC Sabathia finished his final spring start with the regular season approaching quickly.

After the first out of the game, the Washington Nationals would get their first baserunner on a walk and Bryce Harper would hit a triple to right field, putting the Nationals ahead by one. Ryan Zimmerman would hit a single to center field to easily bring Harper home. A ground-rule double down the right field line would extend the lead to three and the Yankees had an early hole to work out of.

After a one-out single in the second inning, Sabathia would retire the next 10 batters he faced. He would get one more out in the fifth inning before a walk ended his day. In 5 1/3 innings, CC Sabathia allowed three runs on five hits while walking three and striking out three. Despite surrendering three runs, Sabathia finished his final spring start strong.

In the fourth inning, Mark Teixeira hit a one-out double and Chase Headley would hit a double of his own, scoring the Yankees first run of the game.

In the seventh inning, Andrew Bailey continues on his road to a comeback. After getting the first two outs on strikeouts, walks would prove to be costly. A single would score the walked batter and another walk would be followed by a big blow. Nick Goody would come in following the walk and Mike Carp would go deep for a three-run home run, giving the Nationals a 7-1 lead.

The Nationals would score one more run in the ninth inning. Ramon Flores and Rob Refsnyder would hit a pair of doubles to give the Yankees their second run of the game but it would be much too little in today’s loss.

Win – Stephen Strasburg (2-1)

Loss – CC Sabathia (0-3)
