New York Yankees 4 – Philadelphia Phillies 1
Through the first two innings, the Yankees offense got one hit against left-hander Cole Hamels, a single by Stephen Drew. For the Yankees; Bryan Mitchell got the nod and held his own nicely through two of his own innings. Mitchell allowed one hit and struck out two while keeping the Phillies off the scoreboard. Mitchell can also thank the defensive-minded shortstop Didi Gregorius for defense like this.
Get used to that, Yankees fans.
After a brief rain delay and three scoreless innings, Mark Teixeira started the fourth inning with a single. Kyle Roller would pinch-run for Teixeira and would come around to score on a double to right-center field by Greg Bird. Ramon Flores would score the second run on a single to right field. With two outs, Slade Heathcott would walk to put two on and Didi Gregorius would hit a double down the right-field line, scoring the third run of a three-run fourth inning.
A fourth Yankees run would come around to score in the sixth inning when Nick Noonan hit a double to right field. The Phillies would avoid the shutout in the seventh inning against reliever Mark Montgomery. Xavier Paul would lead off the seventh inning with a home run to right-center field, scoring the Phillies one and only run of the day.
