Spring Training Game 5: Long ball beats Capuano

Pittsburgh Pirates 3 — New York Yankees 1

Chris Capuano made his Spring debut as a New York Yankee and struggled. The veteran left-hander gave up a single in the first but kept the Pittsburgh Pirates off the scoreboard. He was unsuccessful at stranding a one-out single in the second inning when Tony Sanchez took him deep to right-center field for a two-run home run that put the Pirates ahead by two.

In two difficult innings, Chris Capuano allowed two runs on three hits while striking out four.

In his Spring debut, Carlos Beltran was batting third in the order and would be called out on strikes in the first inning. In the second inning, Alex Rodriguez led off the inning and walked before Garrett Jones grounded into a double play.

In the fifth inning, Jose Ramirez came in for relief and gave up a solo home run to Jaff Decker to put the Pirates ahead by three.

Jake Cave kept the Yankees from being shutout with a run-scoring single in the eighth inning.

In tonight’s game, Carlos Beltran went hitless in three plate appearances, walking in one and striking out in two. Alex Rodriguez was hitless in three plate appearances, walking once and striking out once. Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner each picked up a hit in three plate appearances. Brian McCann remains hitless this Spring, going hitless in three plate appearances but walked once.

Of the Yankees pitchers, David Carpenter pitched a scoreless inning with one hit and one strikeout. Jacob Lindgren went 1 1/3 innings and struck out two with one walk. Chasen Shreve pitched in the ninth and was perfect, striking out one.
