Spring Training Game 7: Mesa hits a home run in Yankees loss

New York Yankees 6 — Houston Astros 7

Houston overcame a 5-run inning with a 6-run inning response in today’s 7-6 loss to the Houston Astros.

The Yankees were held off the board until the 6th inning. Outfielder Zoilo Almonte brought in the first run on a single with runners on the corners. Matt Diaz followed similarly with another run-scoring single. Melky Mesa put the blast in the inning with a three-run home run to complete the 5-run outburst that put the Yankees ahead 5-1 at the time. Prospect Tyler Austin scored on a run-scoring single by outfielder Adonis Garcia after hitting a triple to right field in the 8th inning.

Brett Marshall started today’s game and pitched 3 scoreless innings of 1-hit baseball with 3 strikeouts. Dellin Betances followed with what has become a staple of his pitching, inconsistency. In his inning of work, Betances displayed an outstanding curve and fastball that got 2 strikeouts but also walked 2, a wild pitch, and hit a batter. Pitchers Mikey O’Brien and Shane Greene would get the next 1.2 innings but it would not go well. O’Brien started the 5th inning by giving up a home run to Rick Ankiel. Then, after the Yankees went ahead 5-1, a single, two walks, a pitching change to bring in Greene, and a hit batter would plate one run and leave the bases loaded. Former Yankee Brandon Laird would make the most of the loaded bases and hit a grand slam, putting the Astros ahead by 1. A triple and a double would bring in another run to put the deficit at 2. Mikey O’Brien and Shane Greene gave up 7 runs on 6 hits, 3 walks, and 2 home runs.
