Spring Training Game 7: A-Rod plays third

Washington Nationals 2 — New York Yankees 3

Adam Warren got his second start of the Spring but this one did not go as well as his last. From the first batter, center fielder Michael Taylor took Warren deep to put the Yankees behind by one.

In three innings, Adam Warren allowed one run on four hits while walking none and striking out one.

In the third inning, Jose Pirela got the inning started with a ringing double to right field. Then, with two outs, Brett Gardner would cash-in with a single deep in the hole to the right of shortstop Ian Desmond who could not make the long throw to get the speedy Gardner.

In the fourth inning, Andrew Miller made a quick appearance, striking out one in a perfect inning of work. In the bottom half of the inning, Brian McCann started it with a single the other way. Chris Young would reach base with two outs after a throwing error by third baseman Kevin Frandsen. The extra at-bat would go to Jose Pirela and he made the most of it. A chopper over the mound would be softly hit enough for Pirela to reach on the infield single, scoring McCann and putting the Yankees ahead.

Dellin Betances made his Spring debut in the fifth inning, giving up a leadoff double but bouncing back with a pair of strikeouts in a scoreless inning.

Top prospect Luis Severino took the mound in the sixth inning and would give up a one-out double but bounced back with a pair of strikeouts on a 96 and 97 MPH fastball, respectively. In 1 1/3 innings of work, Severino allowed one unearned run on one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.

In the eighth inning with two outs, Kyle Roller and Aaron Judge hit sharp singles and Cole Figueroa regained the lead for the Yankees with a line drive single to right field.

Manning third base for the first time this year, Alex Rodriguez had one hit in two at-bats, a bloop ground-rule double down the right field line. He also fielded a ground ball smoothly with a strong throw to first to end an inning.
