Spring Training Game 8: Sloppy defense costly in loss

Philadelphia Phillies 10 — New York Yankees 5

Four errors continues to show sloppy defense in Spring in today’s 10-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Francisco Cervelli did well in today’s game offensively going 2 for 2, hitting a double and scoring twice and defensively when he threw Jimmy Rollins out at second to complete a double play following a strikeout in the 4th inning. Outfielder Ronnie Mustelier and Melky Mesa each went deep in the 6th and 7th inning, respectively. This home run is the second for Mesa in 2 days.

Defense made it difficult for the pitcher’s today. Hiroki Kuroda started today’s game and gave up 4 runs but only 1 was earned in his 1.2 innings of work. Errors by Kyle Roller at first base and Kevin Youkilis at third base played a role in the unearned runs scoring. Joba Chamberlain gave up 2 runs in his inning of work as he couldn’t get the last out of the inning before a single and two walks loaded the bases for outfielder John Mayberry to bring in the runs. Cody Eppley’s struggling Spring continued with the poor defense too. An infield error extended an inning, loading the bases and two more runs to score in Eppley’s 4-run mess.
