Yankees make second round of cuts

The Yankees will play the Braves today from Orlando, but their bus will be a little lighter as they make the trip. After last night’s game, the Yankees announced a few cuts from the big league camp.

Catcher Gary Sanchez was optioned to Trenton, RHP Domingo German to Tampa and RHP Branden Pinder to Scranton. Infielders Greg Bird and Kyle Roller were assigned to the minor-league camp.

Out of those that were cut, Bird probably opened the most eyes. He picked up right where he left off when he won the Arizona Fall League MVP. This spring training, Bird went 5-for-14 (.357) with with 3 doubles, a homer and 4 RBI.

Bird has garnered a lot of praise from the Yankees over the last year, and rightfully so. GM Brian Cashman said recently that Bird is “by far the best hitter” among the Yankee minor leaguers. Bird will begin the year at Trenton, and could see Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season.

As camp begins to enter it’s final stages, we should be seeing more cuts and reassignments.
