Yankees Spring Training 15: Cervelli serves up two bombs

Yankees-logoDetroit Tigers 7 — New York Yankees 7

Hiroki Kuroda got the start today and it wasn’t a start worth writing home about. The first two batters hit a single and scored a run on an error by Kelly Johnson. A second run would come in on a sacrifice fly. After another couple of singles, prospect Nick Castellanos would hit a double to right center field to score two more runs. The final out would come on a single to center fielder Mason Williams, who would throw home to stop the Tigers from making a four-run lead more.

Kuroda would settle down for a perfect second inning but his third inning featured another hard hit single with a pair of line drive doubles to bring in two more runs. Hiroki Kuroda would reach his 60 pitches for the day in the fourth inning before exiting with two on and two out.

In 3.2 innings, Hiroki Kuroda allowed six runs on 10 hits while striking out one.

The Yankees were put into an early six run hole but the man behind the plate would get the offense going. Francisco Cervelli would go deep for a solo home run in the third and would double it up in the fifth inning. The home run leader of the Yankees this Spring has three home runs as he competes for the backup catcher’s job.

Another catcher competing for the backup job, John Ryan Murphy would bring in a run in the eighth inning. Zelous Wheeler would hit a two-run double as the Yankees rallied to make it a one-run game.  The Yankees would enter the ninth inning trailing by two when Zoilo Almonte tied it up. A deep two-run home run to left field would tie the game at seven and that would be the final score.

The second part of the Pineda-Montero trade, Jose Campos made his Spring debut with a scoreless inning. He got a strikeout on a 93 MPH fastball. He allowed one hit.

No winners, no losers, can the regular season start already?
