Yankees Spring Training Game 1: Winston and Seminoles visit GMS Field

Yankees-logoFlorida State Seminoles 3 — New York Yankees 8

The first game of Spring Training was with the local Florida State Seminoles coming to visit George M. Steinbrenner Field.

The Yankees got on the board early with a pair of doubles by Zoilo Almonte and Brendan Ryan in the second inning. In a very unique run-scoring play, prospect Gary Sanchez hit a pop sacrifice fly into foul territory that Seminoles’ catcher and pitcher went after. With a runner on third, the battery mates made the catch but they left home plate exposed for a sacrifice fly that stayed in the infield.

Second baseman Yangervis Solarte brought in a run in today’s game. John Ryan Murphy had a perfect 2-for-2 day with a pair of doubles, scoring a run and driving in a run. Dean Anna, competing for a job on the major league roster, went 1-for-2 with a walk but scored twice and drove in a run too.

The Yankees hit five doubles in today’s game. Outfielder Ramon Flores hit a home run in the eighth inning.

Left-hander Vidal Nuno started today’s game and went two scoreless innings. He gave up one hit but struck out three. All three runs scored by the Seminoles today were credited to Shane Greene.

The noteworthy player of the Seminoles, Heisman winner Jameis Winston entered the game in the fifth inning, playing left field. Winston would ground out to second baseman Corban Joseph in his first at-bat and strikes out looking in his second at-bat.
