Yankees Spring Training Game 12: Yankees Nearly No-Hit in Loss

Dominican Republic 8 — New York Yankees 2

The Yankees dealt with the World Baseball Classic Dominican Republic team in today’s 8-2 loss.

Hiroki Kuroda started and pitched very well against the powerhouse Dominican Republic team that featured stars like Toronto’s Jose Reyes and Edwin Encarnacion, and fellow Yankee Robinson Cano. Kuroda pitched 3 innings of scoreless baseball with four strikeouts and just two hits. The bullpen didn’t fare too well. Cody Eppley would give up a run in his inning of work. Lefty Clay Rapada would only get one out in his appearance while walking two and allowing a run as well. Jim Miller’s relief appearance didn’t go well either, despite escaping a bases-loaded situation with a double play. Miller gave up three runs on two hits and three walks. The bullpen would give up eight runs total with two going unearned due to a pair of errors by corner infielder Dan Johnson.

The Yankees were held hitless by some familiar faces on the Dominican Republic pitching staff. Minor league left-handed pitcher Vidal Nuno pitched four innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Former Yankee Jose Veras took the next inning and pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout. Then another member of the Yankees organization, Juan Cedeno pitched and walked one in his inning of work. Reliever Atahualpa Severino would be the only Dominican pitcher to give up a hit in today’s game. The first hit for the Yankees came from switch-hitting outfielder Zoilo Almonte, his second home run of the Spring and his first versus a left-handed pitcher. Catcher Bobby Wilson almost hit a home run of his own but settled for a double as the second and last hit for the Yankees today. For the Dominican Republic, Robinson Cano drove in a run on a single to right field.

Win – Vidal Nuno
