Yankees Spring Training Game 17: Offense struggles on the road

Yankees-logoNew York Yankees 2 — Philadelphia Philles 6

The Yankees split squad team sent to visit the Philadelphia Phillies struggled. Phillies starter Roberto Hernandez had the groundball working on the Yankees today.  The Yankees would not get their first hit until the sixth inning when Scott Sizemore would hit a single.

The Yankees had Ivan Nova starting on the road. He would dance out of trouble through the first two innings, including striking out three after letting the first two on with singles, but the Phillies finally got to the righty. Four consecutive singles by the Philles would plate two runs before Nova would get his first out. He would allow one more run on a double play and outielder Ramon Flores did his pitcher a favor and played a double into an out when he threw home to prevent a third run from scoring.

While Nova did struggle in one inning, his start could have been worse. In five innings, Nova allowed threee runs on nine hits while striking out six.

In the sixth inning, Jacoby Ellsbury would hit his first home run as a Yankee, a solo home run to get the Yankees on the board. Francisco Cervelli would continue his hot hitting with a single to follow a Kelly Johnson double. The single would make it a 4-2 game but that is as close as it gets for the Yankees.

There wasn’t much to talk about for the Yankees offense. Preston Claiborne struggled in his appearance, getting just two outs in his appearance. He allowed three runs on four hits to let the Phillies expand the lead.
