Yankees Spring Training Game 23: Mesa, Youkilis go deep

New York Yankees 11 — Pittsburgh Pirates 9

Melky Mesa and Kevin Youkilis continue getting into season form in today’s 11-9 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Ivan Nova started today’s game and went five innings. He struggled in the 4th inning and it started with a walk of former Yankee Russell Martin. A hit batter and a pair of double were a part of a three-run 4th inning. David Robertson had a scoreless inning of work and a pair of minor league pitchers would struggle to finish the game.

The Yankees utilized speed in their offense which may be key in the upcoming season. The Yankees had a total of five stolen bases today, including two by Eduardo Nunez. The Yankees also showed some of their traditional power offense through Kevin Youkilis and Melky Mesa. Youkilis hit his third home run of the Spring in the 1st inning and hit a double to bring in a total of three runs today. Melky Mesa had the biggest swing of the game with a grand slam in the 3rd inning, his third home run of the Spring too. Eduardo Nunez got two hits and recently acquired Brennan Boesch got two hits and brought in a run.

Win – Ivan Nova

Loss – Phil Irwin
