Yankees-logoToronto Blue Jays 3 — New York Yankees 1

Michael Pineda appears to have his final start in the fifth starting pitcher battle and he was able to minimize the damage he allowed. After an easygoing first inning, a common struggle haunted Pineda. In the second inning, Eduardo Nunez would commit a throwing error to let the first batter reach base. Adam Lind would hit a bloop single to left field and Dioner Navarro would bring in the first run of the game. Pineda would get a strikeout before hitting Brett Lawrie with a pitch to reload the bases. The damage would be minimized with a ground out into a double play.

In the fifth inning, after getting six consecutive outs after the rough second inning, Pineda would give up a pair of singles. he would then botch a sacrifice bunt attempt with a throw that hit the baserunner for a throwing error that allowed a run to score. Pineda would benefit from some good defense as Goins, the baserunner at first, would be caught stealing second. but a wild pitch would allow a third run to score for the game.

In six innings, Michael Pineda gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out two. The two earned runs allowed in the fifth inning were the first earned runs allowed by Pineda.

In the seventh inning, reliever Chris Leroux got the first out and a lefty in consideration for the bullpen, Cesar Cabral, was called on to get some left-handed batters out. Cabral would proceed to give up a single and walked two batters to load the bases with one out in a very ineffective apperance. The big Dellin Betances was called on for some major clean-up work against two brand name big league bats, Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion. The first batter, Bautista would see four consecutive curveballs, all taken and after a close ball called on an 0-2 count, Betances made the fourth count with a strikeout looking of the slugging right-hander. Betances would get Encarnacion to fly out to left field and Betances inherited three runners without allowing a run to score.

Brett Gardner got two hits in three at-bats. Carlos Beltran also got two hits, one for a double in three at-bats.
