Yankees Spring Training Game 3: Miggy mashes the Yankees in shutout loss

New York Yankees 0 – Detroit Tigers 3

Not much offense to speak of when the Yankees were shutout in their visit to the Detroit Tigers.

Like the Yankees first meeting with the Tigers this spring, a Yankees starter hit a Tigers batter. After Severino hit Maybin in the arm (and fracturing it), Yankees starter Bryan Mitchell hit second baseman Ian Kinsler. A second Tigers batter would get plunked later in the game, making in three in two games.

Beyond the hit batter, Bryan Mitchell pitched well. In two no-hit innings, Mitchell walked one and hit one but struck out two.

After two scoreless from Mitchell, bullpen candidate Vinnie Pestano took the mound and struggled with command. After hitting a batter with one out and walking the next, he got the second out but faced the biggest bat in the Tigers lineup. Slugging first baseman Miguel Cabrera jumped on the hanging breaking ball and put a three-run home run over the right-center field wall to put the Tigers ahead by three.

Overall, the Yankees scattered six hits with just one going for extra bases. Didi Gregorius hit a double in the fifth inning but, as the score indicates, he was stranded.

The positive for Yankees pitching came in the form of 2015 draft pick James Kaprielian and recently acquired Luis Cessa. In the fifth inning, Kaprielian started the inning and sandwiched strikeouts of Jose Iglesias and Ian Kinsler around a fly out of Anthony Gose. In the sixth inning, Kaprielian went back to work and got Mike Aviles, Andrew Romine and Victor Martinez out in two perfect innings of work against major league talent. Luis Cessa took over after Kaprielian and despite a one-out double pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth inning.

Regarding the backup catcher competition, Austin Romine was hitless in three at-bats but caught Kinsler stealing second in the first inning.

Not much to write home about but it is Spring Training and there is plenty of time for players to prove themselves.
