Yankees Spring Training Game 30: Minor bullpen blows big lead

Yankees-logoNew York Yankees 6 — Toronto Blue Jays 10

The beginning of today’s game looked promising for the Yankees. Against R.A. Dickey, the Yankees got a walk from Derek Jeter and a single by Carlos Beltran and Alfonso Soriano to load the bases with just one out.Kelly Johnson would bring in the first two runs of the game with a single to right field.

In the second inning, Brian Roberts started with a single and advanced to third on a pickoff error by Dickey. Dean Anna would hit a double to bring home Roberts. Gardner would walk and Derek Jeter would hit a single to right field to load the bases. Carlos Beltran would hit a two-run double to give the Yankees a five-run lead in the second inning. Soriano would hit a sacrifice fly to center field and the Yankees looked poised for victory with a six-run lead.

Starting for the Yankees, Chris Leroux hit some bumps in the road, the first being the big bump, a home run by Brett Lawrie to make it a 6-1 game in the second inning. In the third inning, Leroux physically got hit around. Catcher Josh Thole would deflect a single off of the pitcher before the next batter lined into a double play. Former Yankee Melky Cabrera would deflect a single off Leroux too. Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion would hit back-to-back singles to plate the second run of the game for the Blue Jays.

The majority of minor league relievers would enter following Leroux’s start. Matt Daley got his one out as he continues to be a candidate for the major league rotation. Things really got out of control in the fifth inning with Fred Lewis and Preston Claiborne.

Lefty Fred Lewis would give up a run on a double and a run-scoring single by Cabrera. Claiborne would follow and Jose Bautista would rudely welcome the righty with a double to put runners on second and third. Encarnacion would take a pitch off his hand to load the bases and exit the game. Adam Lind would hit a two-run single to center field to make it a 6-5 game. Lawrie would hit an unusual ground-rule double that landed between two walls to bring home the tying run. Colby Rasmus would walkΒ  and Maicer Izturis would give the Jays the lead with a two-run single and the game changed completely. Former Yankee catcher Dioner Navarro would hit a sacrifice fly for another run and Melky Cabrera would have himself a game with a ringing double to center field to score another run.

Fred Lewis would give up two runs on two hits with one walk while getting two outs. Preston Claiborne would continue to struggle this Spring, this game may be his worst. Claiborne pitched to six batters and allowed six runs on four hits with one walk.

Dellin Betances had a scoreless inning as he continues to have an outstanding Spring. Derek Jeter got one hit and one walk while scoring twice. Carlos Beltran got two hits, including a double, bringing home two runs and scoring once. Kelly Johnson brought in two runs on one hit and Dean Anna walked once, scored once and got a hit while walking once.
